A global pandemic such as the COVID-19 not only influences the demand and supply quantities or the availability of the production resources, but it demands the manufacturing of completely new products, including medical equipment. In order to enable quick and successful adaptation to unexpected changes, the manufacturing processes need to be designed in a robust way that enables multi-purpose production capabilities.
The manufacturing technology need be selected considering not only the production efficiency, but also the changeability. The importance of multi-scenario production planning becomes critical. The workforce needs to consider the diversity of skills, so that the workers with the required skills will be available even in case of sudden changes in the requirements. An important enabler of the production robustness is the material supply, even in case of closed borders and reduced international transportation.
